The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to avoid or limit the use of sildenafil (Viagra) tablets, commonly known by the brand name Viagra, because of the increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events in patients on high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
“Heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or other factors may increase the risk of certain cardiovascular events in patients taking medicines for high blood pressure,” the FDA said in its announcement. “These risks appear to be dose-related and, in some cases, may be dose-related with certain other medicines.”
The agency said the increased risk is particularly concerning for people on high blood pressure and other high cholesterol who already have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
The FDA’s alert is based on two recent studies. One was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of sildenafil in 36,108 patients on high blood pressure, and the other was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of placebo.
Sildenafil was well tolerated in patients treated with the FDA-approved medicines.
The study found that patients on sildenafil had a 25 percent greater risk of a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular event than patients on placebo.
Sildenafil and other medicines for high blood pressure also were associated with a 15 percent increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular events.
In a statement, the FDA said the drug had not been studied in patients with other serious cardiovascular disease or who were taking other medicines for high blood pressure.
The statement also noted that the FDA has not approved Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction.
